Borrowed against your salary, not your assets

Know the answer before you apply

If you draw a monthly salary, a personal loan is the fastest money you can raise and among the most expensive. Worth knowing what you qualify for — and whether you should use it — before an application touches your credit file.

What a lender actually looks at

Four things, in this order

None of them is your salary on its own, which is the part most people get wrong.

  1. What lands in the account

Net salary credited, not CTC. Allowances that do not arrive every month are usually discounted, and a variable component is treated cautiously until it has a pattern behind it.

  2. What you already repay

Every running EMI and card balance counts against you. Lenders cap total repayments as a share of net income — so two existing loans can matter more to the answer than a raise would.

  3. Who signs the salary

Employer category is a real input. A listed company, a government department and an unlisted small firm are assessed differently for the same salary, and it moves both the limit and the rate.

  4. The credit file

Score, age of history, and how you have handled unsecured borrowing before. This is also the part an application damages — see below.

Worth saying plainly

This is the most expensive money most salaried people ever borrow

A personal loan is unsecured, so the lender prices in the risk of having nothing to recover. If you own property, a loan against it will usually cost several percentage points less over a longer term. If you hold mutual funds, a loan against securities may cost less again and leaves the investment running. Neither is as fast, and both are frequently the better answer.

For a genuine emergency, speed is worth paying for. For a purchase that could wait a few months, it usually is not. We will say which one we think you are looking at, and that conversation sometimes ends with us arranging nothing at all.

The thing that quietly costs people money

Applying to several lenders makes the next one say no

Every formal application triggers a hard enquiry on your credit report. Several in a short window reads as someone shopping urgently for money, and lenders price and decline accordingly — so the scattergun approach makes the outcome worse, not more likely.

The file can be assessed before anyone applies. We check the salary, the obligations and the score against what each lender will actually accept, and then apply once, to the lender most likely to say yes at the best terms available to you.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

How much can I borrow on my salary?

It depends far more on what you already repay than on what you earn. Lenders work to a ceiling on total monthly repayments as a share of net income, so an existing car loan or a card balance reduces the limit directly. Tell us the salary and the running EMIs and we can give you a realistic range before you apply.

What credit score do I need?

Most lenders want 700 or above for unsecured borrowing, and pricing improves sharply above 750. Below about 650 the honest answer is usually to repair the score first — we will tell you what is dragging it and roughly how long it takes.

How long does it take?

Days rather than weeks once documents are complete. The delay is almost always document collection, not the lender deciding.

Can I prepay it early?

Usually, after a lock-in of six to twelve months, and often with a charge on the outstanding amount. Check that before signing — on a personal loan the prepayment terms matter as much as the rate.

Do you charge me for this?

No. We are paid by the lender when a loan is disbursed. You should know that arrangement exists — it is why we say it here rather than in a footnote.
